Everyone has good outfit days and bad outfit days. You know when you try everything on in your wardrobe and it looks like a hurricane hit your room but you still have absolutely nothing to wear. Days like these can leave you down and in the dumps as you leave the house in less than perfection. The phenomenon of the bad outfit day is that it literally has nothing to do with the clothing that you own, just like a bad hair day has nothing to do with the hair products or shampoos you use. For some reason, even outfits you have worn before and loved, somehow look horrible. The causes are mysterious, maybe it is a product of emotions, poor sleep, planetary alignment, who can say. The real conundrum is what to do on a day like this! Tim Gunn’s words once again come to mind, you just have to “Make it work!”
The other day was one of those bad outfit days for me, I just wasn’t feeling it. I chose a cute grey wintry sweater and wished for an outfit worthy of its seasonal charm. I had some good ideas of what to wear under my sweater... I got all my layers put on and they looked great, then I went to ad the last layer, the piece de resistance, my sweater. And, well, flop, I hated it. I had to make some quick last minute switches because I didn't have enough time before work to start all over again. What really saved the day was my accessory choices. My new thigh-high socks (Goodwill $0.99), Gap Christmas sweater (Goodwill $4.99), and beautiful Petunia Picklebottom Diaper Bag (Goodwill $19.99). I always love to bring my own diaper bag, for so many reasons. Its another accessory that you can match with, its convenient because you wont leave anything that belongs to you in their diaper bag by accident, and you don't have to deal with carrying around busy parents cluttered diaper bags. One time I opened a diaper bag and saw a spider, I was so pleased to have my own diaper bag that day. I like to streamline my bag and only carry the essentials, no spiders necessary. This bad outfit day turned out okay, and all because i decided to let go of my original concept and add some fun and practical accessories.
Sometimes a bad outfit day can leave you questioning your wardrobe choices, making you want to get rid of everything and start all over again. I was kinda feeling that way about this sweater when I began to get dressed the next day. I had no intentions of wearing the sweater. I had been wounded from the previous days failed outfit compilations, I had even contemplated putting the sweater into my "get rid of bin".
My inspiration for my outfit was my black Spanx tights that I found for $3.99 new in the package, with original price tag of $32.50. By the way, they are so comfortable and stayed up all day long, paired with warm cozy boot socks found for $2.99 new with original tags priced at $18.95. That is $51.45 worth of leg warmth cuteness for only $7.
My requirement for the outfit was Christmas theme, as it was Christmas Eve, I was working so I had to be seasonal and comfortable. As I finished my outfit I found myself drawn back to the same inspiration piece from the day before, unlike the day before, it just worked. It looked and felt amazing. The clothing Gods had smiled down upon this sweater and saved it from being condemned to the "get rid of bin."
I have learned that there will be good outfit days and bad outfit days, but as long as you have the right accessories and the right attitude, you will always be able to make yourself and Tim Gunn proud, because you too can “Make it work!"
